Day 1: Bucharest – Sinaia – Rasnov – Bran –Brasov

It is said that on a clear day you can see the mountains from Bucharest. And it’s true: they are merely 100 km away.

We will depart early in the morning to get to the mountains, cross them and see some of the wonders that are beyond them: the Peles Castle (summer residence of the kings of Romania), Bran Castle (Dracula’s Castle), the citadel of Rasnov, and the wonderful medieval historical center of Brasov.

This tour takes you from medieval times to modern times, from Teutonic knights to kings and local celebrities.

Our first stop is the Peles Castle, summer residence of King Carol I, first Romanian ruler of the Hohenzollern dynasty. In was built in 1885, with Neo Renaissance architecture and gothic ornaments and was used as a summer residence by the royal family until 1947. Since the king was in Sinaia 6 months per year, the court also needed to be there, so the small mountain town is a jewel in itself.

After a small architectural sightseeing and lunch in Sinaia, we embark on a journey towards the mystical part of our tour. Since Bram Stoker wrote his famous novel “Dracula”, people have wanted to locate in Transylvania the castle that inspired the novel. The Bran fortress, which stood on the border between Wallachia and Transylvania, with its location high on a steep hill and its Gothic influences, appeared to many to be the perfect residence for a vampire. Its history is, albeit, a little different. But we’ll let you find that there, on the spot.

After visiting Bran Castle, our next stop is the citadel of Rasnov. You’ll see it from far away, on top of a hill. Build at the beginning of the 13th century, during the rule of the Teutonic knights, the citadel’s main purpose was to offer refuge to the people from the surrounding area against invading armies – which often came from Bran. Besides the breathtaking view, another hot spot of the Rasnov Citadel is the well, dug in the rock by Turkish prisoners for 17 years.

We arrive in Brasov, check-in at our hotel and free time to enjoy the city’s vibrant nightlife. Overnight in Brasov.

Day 2: Brasov – Bucharest

Our morning will be dedicated to the city of Brasov, with its Black Church, the biggest Gothic church in Transylvania and the greatest religious structure from Vienna to Istanbul.

It was built at the beginning of the 13th century, by order of the King of Hungary; the Teutonic knights fortified the region and the city in order to secure the kingdom’s border. Thus, a small village turned into Kronstadt – the city of the crown. The majority of the population was German and they were involved mainly in trade and crafts. Situated between the Ottoman Empire and the Western World, the city developed quickly and gained a significant political importance.

We will stroll through the unchanged medieval streets, admire the old historical center from the White Tower to the Black Tower, climb on the fortified walls which border the forests from Mount Tampa.

We will take pictures on The Rope Street, we will see the Ecaterina Gate, The Schei district and visit The first Romanian School. Afterwards we will use the cable car to get on Mount Tampa, where we will have an amazing panoramic view of the city and we will take pictures close to the “Hollywood” sign of the city. On our way back we will visit the Weaver’s Bastion with the city’s 3d model and permanent exhibition.

Late afternoon we return to Bucharest. End of program.
